a rose bombing

Posted on

ya ya…i said i wouldnt leave it this long again. i should stop making promises. promises are made to be broken anyway arent they?

ive been busy with stuff over here, jewellerywithaheart.wordpress.com.

id love your opinions!

also, ive been super busy organizing a community art project, the Art Bomb Project, to take place during our town’s annual street festival, Ennis Street Festival.

we’ve had over 30 donated works of art and craft come in to us to bomb our lovely town. ive created a few pieces, an earring/bracelet set, a purple crochet rose on a background of crochet chains in black and white, and three acrylic paintings…trying my hand at something new. the last time i sat down to paint something was in art class in grade 8. Im a math&science girl at heart so all of this creative arty business is very new to me.

so here are my contributions in all their glory!

Not that im the busiest person in the world at the moment, i definitely could be doing more marketing/advertising for my jewellery. Im still learning what works and what doesnt…please leave advice for me if youve found something that works for you!

but even the slackers among us deserve some downtime from whatever it is we’ve been doing. today is one of those days. i woke up much later than usual and remembering id cancelled my therapy appointment for the afternoon. ive not been making any new jewellery on my husbands advice of selling what i have first. ive turned my head back to crochet and a big incentive was that i actually sold one of my boobie hats, without any advertisement of the shop or my wares! another German sale…hey ill sell them to anyone anywhere! i think theyre great.

The Handy Hooker on Etsy.

It always feel great to sell something youve created to someone, especially when that someone is a stranger in a faraway land.

in the past few nights ive crocheted two kitten toys (one black and one white) and ive started two cowls. one for a close friend of mine and another to possibly list on Etsy. ive been thinking a lot about my Hooker shop and whether or not i should shut her down. i love to crochet. do i love it as much as making jewellery? i think i do but in a different way. im finding i love crocheting for family and friends and doing it once in awhile and posting a few things here and there. with jewellery i find i could just make it all the time for everyone. i almost feel addicted to it. to the creative freedom it gives me. a feeling ive never experienced before.

so today, and the last few days, have been a break from that high. and it feels good. it feels good to handle some hooks and yarn. to know that i can walk away from the wire and beads and still want to do it but not only do that, creatively.

im not sure how much sense all that made…but i didnt have my therapy today. so forgive me and just nod and smile ;)

unimaginative yet informative

ok, so im a complete bore right now. but ill admit it. i have two of these blog things on the go. one is for therapeutic reasons and i write anonymously and then there’s this one, which ill eventually put on facebook and share with people in my life. ive even been neglecting my therapy blog but i refuse to be hard on myself. i will write in them more often…im just creating the habit now and trying to find my flow. im by no means a wordsmith and i know i can babble on and even jump all around with my writing but i tend to write as i think or think as i write?

anyway, today i thought id share some of my favourite websites. those few i go to that arent facebook, wordpress or email accounts.

they may interest you too. they are a mix but are mainly resources for food or crochet or other fun things im interested in.

Food sites:

Crochet Sites:

  • www.crochetpatterncentral.com – exactly what it says on the tin. free patterns all over the place for anything you can imagine!
  • www.ravelry.com – you need to join to see any patterns but its free and fun! for knitters and crocheters or those talented humans who can do both. thousands of patterns some free some not but all available for inspiration and a great community.
  • www.crochetspot.com – tutorials, tools, stitches, free patterns, great communication, just a nice little big site :)
  • Crochet Geek – Free Instructions and Patterns – possibly the BEST place for tutorials on everything crochet from how to create a magic loop to crocheting hats, blankets and doilies. she also has a youtube channel. definitely check it out!

Other Fun Sites:

  • Rebtel – the cheapest long distance ive ever found. you can use your landline, mobile or computer for calls. similar to skype on the computer but far more versatile and not owned by google, yet. clear connections and calls are free on your mobile if you use their app and the person youre calling is also a rebtel app user. woowoo! free long-distance  is always a good thing.
  • our feminist playschool – a superb blog by a close friend. children in your life? this blog should be on your list!!
  • tv shows – streaming any show you want for free. great site especially since icefilms was wiped out with the whole megashare b.s.
  • www.etsy.com – most people know Etsy and the high-priced handmade heaven its become. i know i know the prices reflect the quality and length of time it takes to create some of these items. i too have an Etsy shop and i struggle with pricing my products fairly for both me and the consumer. anywho..still a great place for some hidden one of a kind treasures.
  • www.pinterest.com – no brainer here. get an invite and get started on your Pinterest journey. just pin it!
  • feralcatsireland.org – im sure something like this exists where you live and if it doesnt, get talking about it!

As promised, nothing very imaginative here but just a few of my favourite sites. give them a go. i dont have to promote these sites. no ones giving me anything to do this, i just wanted to share some sites that some people might not know about. there are so many shit sites out there, i always find recommendations useful.

thats me for today. keeping it simple and boring :)

loads of love.

a clowder of crocheted cats to come

Posted on

all of the children i know, under the age of 5, are getting one of these this year. for their birthday AND christmas!

i have found the easiest, cutest, cuddliest crochet project, ever! I give you, the Crochet Cat by Marmalade Rose. This example was done by me, in one evening. my first stuffed toy. she stands a few inches tall and maybe 6 inches long. her features are soft so they are safe for all ages. and she is just adorable.

Thank you Marmalade Rose for giving us your gorgeous kittycat pattern.
Ive been searching high and low for a cute cat pattern and this beats all (free)  patterns out there.

im not one for intricate patterns and this one is very easy to follow. just remember she is writing in UK terms so her dc is a sc for the US crocheters. i actually used a US hdc for the body of my kitten and worked 22 rows of hdc + a single row of sc to make the 34 rows of sc that the pattern calls for. it worked out great. the dimensions were fine im assuming because it looks like the picture :)

i used sc for the head and tail. i just prefer the hdc BUT as i work this second kitten, im sticking with sc as the hdc makes for larger holes when stuffed so the stuffing shows through (not that you can tell on this grey girl but the black one im doing it might show up if i dont use the sc). did that make sense? sometimes im not as clear as i wish to be with direction.

anywho, first kitten down and a few more to go.

im thinking i may even pop a few up for sale on etsy or facebook and see how they go.

im still working on that flower blanket too, i realized i need 20 of each flower not 12 so im still trucking along.  this was just a welcomed break. my fingers were crying out to make something other than flowers for a couple of days.

here are more pictures of the grey kitten…black one to come.
